13. 4. 1.

(30) Catusso Þ Four Elements

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anathapindika in Jeta's grove in Savatthi.

2. ßBhikkhus, these four are the elements. What four? They are the element of earth, the element of water, the element of fire and the element of air. These are the four elements.û



13. 4. 2.

(31) Pubbe Þ In the Past

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, in the past, when I was yet an aspirant for enlightenment this occurred to me:

3. ßWhat is the satisfaction, danger and the escape on account of the earth element? What is the satisfaction, danger and the escape on account of the water element? What is the satisfaction, danger and the escape on account of the fire element? And what is the satisfaction, danger and the escape on account of the air element?

4. ßBhikkhus, it occurred to me:

5. ßWhatever pleasantness and pleasure arises on account of the earth element, that is the satisfaction in the earth element. That the earth element is impermanent, unpleasant and a changing thing is the danger in the earth element. Taming the interest and greed for the earth element and dispelling the interest and greed for the earth element is the escape from the earth element.

6. ßWhatever pleasantness and pleasure arises on account of the water element, ... re ...

7. ßWhatever pleasantness and pleasure arises on account of the fire element, ... re ...

8. ßWhatever pleasantness and pleasure arises on account of the air element, that is the satisfaction in the air element. That the air element is impermanent, unpleasant and a changing thing is the danger in the air element. Taming the interest and greed for the air element and dispelling the interest and greed for the air element is the escape from the air element.

9. ßBhikkhus, until I thoroughly understood the satisfaction as the satisfaction, the danger as the danger and the escape as the escape from these four elements, I did not acknowledge that I have realized the incomparable rightful enlightenment to gods and men together with Màra and Brahma and the community of recluses and brahmins.

10. ßBhikkhus, when I thoroughly understood as it really is, the satisfaction as the satisfaction, the danger as the danger and the escape as the escape from these four elements, I acknowledged that I have realized the incomparable rightful enlightenment to gods and men together with Màra, Brahma and the community of recluses and brahmins.

11. ßKnowledge too arose to me, the release of my mind is unshakeable, this is my last birth, there is no more re-birth.û



13. 4. 3.

(32) Acariü Þ I Wandered Searching

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, I wandered searching the satisfaction in the earth element. Whatever satisfaction there is in the earth element, I understood it. I have wisely and thoroughly seen the satisfaction in the earth element.

3. ßBhikkhus, I wandered searching the danger in the earth element. Whatever danger there is in the earth element, I understood it. I have wisely and thoroughly seen the danger in the earth element.

4. ßBhikkhus, I wandered searching the escape from the earth element. Whatever escape there is in the earth element, I understood it. I have wisely and thoroughly seen the escape from the earth element.

5-7. ßBhikkhus, I wandered searching the satisfaction ... re ... danger ... re ... escape from the water element ... re ...

8-10. ßBhikkhus, I wandered searching the satisfaction ... re ... danger ... re ... escape from the fire element ... re ...

11. ßBhikkhus, I wandered searching the satisfaction in the earth element. Whatever satisfaction there is in the earth element, I understood it. I have wisely and thoroughly seen the satisfaction in the earth element.

12. ßBhikkhus, I wandered searching the danger in the earth element. Whatever danger there is in the earth element, I understood it. I have wisely and thoroughly seen the danger in the earth element.

13. ßBhikkhus, I wandered searching the escape from the earth element. Whatever escape there is in the earth element, I understood it. I have wisely and thoroughly seen the escape from the earth element.

14. ßBhikkhus, until I thoroughly understood the satisfaction as the satisfaction, the danger as the danger and the escape as the escape from these four elements, I did not acknowledge that I have realized the incomparable rightful enlightenment to gods and men together with Màra and Brahma and the community of recluses and brahmins.

15. ßBhikkhus, when I thoroughly understood as it really is, the satisfaction as the satisfaction, the danger as the danger and the escape as the escape from these four elements, I acknowledged that I have realized the incomparable rightful enlightenment to gods and men together with Màra, Brahma and the community of recluses and brahmins.

16. ßKnowledge too arose to me, the release of my mind is unshakeable, this is my last birth, there is no more rebirth.û



13. 4. 4.

(33) Yo no cedaü Ý If There Weren't

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, if there was no satisfaction in the earth element, beings would not have embraced the earth element. As there is a satisfaction in the earth element, beings embrace the earth element.

3. ßBhikkhus, if there was no danger in the earth element, beings would not have turned away from the earth element. As there is a danger in the earth element, beings turn away from the earth element.

4. ßBhikkhus, if there was no escape from the earth element, beings would not have escaped from the earth element. As there is an escape from the earth element, beings escape from the earth element.

5-7. ßBhikkhus, if there was no satisfaction ... re ... no danger ... re ... no escape from the water element ... re ...

8-10. ßBhikkhus, if there was no satisfaction ... re ... no danger ... re ... no escape from the fire element ... re ...

11. ßBhikkhus, if there was no satisfaction in the air element, beings would not have embraced the air element. As there is a satisfaction in the air element, beings embrace the air element.

12. ßBhikkhus, if there was no danger in the air element, beings would not have turned away from the air element. As there is a danger in the air element, beings turn away from the air element.

13. ßBhikkhus, if there was no escape from the air element, beings would not have escaped from the air element. As there is an escape from the air element, beings escape from the air element.

14. ßBhikkhus, until beings thoroughly understood the satisfaction as the satisfaction, the danger as the danger and the escape as the escape from these four elements, they did not live with an unrestricted mind, that has given up, detached and dissociated from the world, together with its gods, Màra Brahma and the community of recluses and brahmins.

15. ßBhikkhus, when beings thoroughly understood as it really is, the satisfaction as the satisfaction, the danger as the danger and the escape as the escape from these four elements, they lived with an unrestricted mind that has given up, detached and is dissociated from gods and men together with Màra, Brahma and the community of recluses and brahmins.



13. 4. 5.

(34) Dukkha Þ Unpleasantness

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, if the earth element was completely unpleasant, was oppressive and was a birth in unpleasantness beings would not have an attachment for the earth element. Bhikkhus, since the earth element is pleasant not oppressive and is a birth in pleasantness, beings attach themselves to the earth element.

3. ßBhikkhus, if the water element ... re ...

4. ßBhikkhus, if the fire element ... re ...

5. ßBhikkhus, if the air element was completely unpleasant, was oppressive and was a birth in unpleasantness beings would not have an attachment for the air element. Bhikkhus, since the air element is pleasant not oppressive and is a birth in pleasantness, beings attach themselves to the air element.

ßBhikkhus, if the earth element was completely pleasant, was not oppressive and was a birth in pleasantness beings would not have turned away from the earth element. Bhikkhus, since the earth element is unpleasant oppressive and is a birth in unpleasantness, beings turn away from the earth element.

3. ßBhikkhus, if the water element was completely pleasant ... re ...

4. ßBhikkhus, if the fire element was completely pleasant ... re ...

5. ßBhikkhus, if the air element was completely pleasant, was not oppressive and was a birth in pleasantness beings would not have turned away from the air element. Bhikkhus, since the air element is unpleasant oppressive and is a birth in unpleasantness, beings turn away from the air element.û



13. 4. 6.

(35) Abhinandaü Ý Delight

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, he who delights in the earth element delights in unpleasantness. He that delights in unpleasantness, I say, is not released from unpleasantness.

3. ßBhikkhus, he who delights in the water element ... re ...

4. ßBhikkhus, he who delights in the fire element ... re ...

5. ßBhikkhus, he who delights in the air element delights in unpleasantness. He that delights in unpleasantness, I say, is not released from unpleasantness.

6. ßBhikkhus, he who does not delight in the earth element does not delight in unpleasantness. He that does not delight in unpleasantness, I say, is released from unpleasantness.

3. ßBhikkhus, he who does not delight in the water element ... re ...

4. ßBhikkhus, he who does not delight in the fire element ... re ...

5. ßBhikkhus, he who does not delight in the air element does not delight in unpleasantness. He that does not delight in unpleasantness, I say, is released from unpleasantness.



13. 4. 7.

(36) Uppado Þ Arising

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, the appearance, stability and rebirth of the earth element is the appearance of unpleasantness, the continuance of ailments and the manifestation of decay and death.

3. ßBhikkhus, the appearance, stability and rebirth of the water element, is the appearance of unpleasantness, the continuance of ailments and the manifestation of decay and death.

4. ßBhikkhus, the appearance, stability and rebirth of the fire element, is the appearance of unpleasantness, the continuance of ailments and the manifestation of decay and death.

5. ßBhikkhus, the appearance, stability and rebirth of the air element, is the appearance of unpleasantness, the continuance of ailments and the manifestation of decay and death.

6. ßBhikkhus, the cessation, mastery and disappearance of the earth element, is the cessation of unpleasantness, the mastery of ailments and the disappearance of decay and death.

7. ßBhikkhus, the cessation, mastery and disappearance of the water element, is the cessation of unpleasantness, the mastery of ailments and the disappearance of decay and death.

8. ßBhikkhus, the cessation, mastery and the disappearance of the fire element, is the cessation of unpleasantness, the mastery of ailments and the disappearance of decay and death.

9. ßBhikkhus, the cessation, mastery, and the disappearance of the air element, is the cessation of unpleasantness, the mastery of ailments and the disappearance of decay and death.



13. 4. 8.

(37) Samanabrahmana II Þ Recluses and Brahmins I

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, these four are the elements. What four? They are the element of earth, the element of water, the element of fire and the element of air. These are the four elements.

3. ßBhikkhus, the recluses and brahmins who do not know, as it really is the satisfaction, danger and the escape from the four elements are not my recluses or brahmins. Among recluses they are not recluses and among brahmins they are not brahmins. And these venerable ones will not by themselves realize and abide in the recluseship or become brahmins in this life.

4. ßBhikkhus, the recluses and brahmins who know, as it really is the satisfaction, danger and the escape from the four elements are my recluses and brahmins. Among recluses they are recluses and among brahmins they are brahmins. And these venerable ones will by themselves realize and abide in the recluseship or will become brahmins in this life.



13. 4. 9.

(38) Samanabrahmana II Ý Recluses and Brahmins II

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, these four are the elements. What four? They are the element of earth, the element of water, the element of fire and the element of air. These are the four elements.

3. Bhikkhus, the recluses and brahmins who do not know, as it really is the arising, fading, satisfaction, danger and the escape from the four elements are not my recluses or brahmins. Among recluses they are not recluses and among brahmins they are not brahmins. And these venerable ones will not by themselves realize and abide in the recluseship or become brahmins in this life.

4. Bhikkhus, the recluses and brahmins who know, as it really is, the arising, fading, satisfaction, danger and the escape from the four elements are my recluses and brahmins. Among recluses they are recluses and among brahmins they are brahmins. And these venerable ones will by themselves, realize and abide in the recluseship or will become brahmins in this life.

(39) Samanabrahmana III Ý Recluses and brahmins III

6. ßBhikkhus, the recluses and brahmins who know the earth element, the arising of the earth element, the cessation of the earth element and the path leading to the cessation of the earth element.

3. ßBhikkhus, the recluses and brahmins who know the water element.

4. ßBhikkhus, the recluses and brahmins who know the fire element.

5. ßBhikkhus, the recluses and brahmins who know the air element, the arising of the air element, the cessation of the air element and the path leading to the cessation of the air element, they are my recluses or brahmins. Among recluses they are recluses and among brahmins they are brahmins. And these venerable ones will by themselves realize and abide in the recluseship or become brahmins in this life.û

(23) Asamahita Ý Not Concentrated

2. ßBhikkhus, beings get together and agree according to the elements.

3. ßThose without faith, agree with others without faith. Those without shame, agree with others without shame. Those without remorse agree with others without remorse. The not concentrated agree with the not concentrated. And those lacking in wisdom agree with others not wise.

4. ßThose with faith, agree with others with faith. Those with shame, agree with others with shame. Those with remorse agree with others with remorse. The concentrated agree with the concentrated. And the wise agree with the wise.û



13. 3. 2.

(24) Dussãla Ý Not Virtuous

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, beings get together and agree according to the elements.

3. ßThose without faith, agree with others without faith. Those without shame, agree with others without shame. Those without remorse agree with others without remorse. The not virtuous agree with the not virtuous. And those lacking in wisdom agree with others not wise.

4. ßThose with faith, agree with others with faith. Those with shame, agree with others with shame. Those with remorse agree with others with remorse. The virtuous agree with the virtuous. And the wise agree with the wise.û



13. 3. 3.

(25) Pa¤casikkhàpadàni Ý Five Precepts

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, beings get together and agree according to the elements.

3. ßThose destroying living things agree with the destroyers of living things. Those taking the not given agree with those who take the not given. Those misbehaving sexually agree with others who misbehave sexually. Those telling lies agree with others who tell lies. Those taking intoxicating things agree with others who take intoxicating things.

4. ßThose abstaining from destroying living things agree with those who do not destroy living things. Those abstaining from taking the not given agree with those who do not take the not given. Those abstaining from misbehaving sexually agree with others who do not misbehave sexually. Those abstaining from telling lies agree with others who do not tell lies. Those abstaining from taking intoxicating things agree with others who do not take intoxicating things.



13. 3. 4.

(26) Sattakammapatha Ý The Seven Ways of Acting

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, beings get together and agree according to the elements.

3. ßThose destroying living things agree with the destroyers of living things. Those taking the not given agree with those who take the not given. Those misbehaving sexually agree with others who misbehave sexually. Those telling lies agree with others who tell lies. Those slandering agree with others who slander. Those talking roughly agree with others talking roughly and those talking frivolously agree with others who talk frivolously.

4. ßThose abstaining from destroying living things agree with those who do not destroy living things. Those abstaining from taking the not given agree with those who do not take the not given. Those abstaining from misbehaving sexually agree with others who do not misbehave sexually. Those abstaining from telling lies agree with others who do not tell lies. Those abstaining from taking intoxicating things agree with others who do not take intoxicating things.û



13. 3. 5.

(27) Dasakammapatha Ý Ten Ways of Acting

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, beings get together and agree according to the elements.

3. ßThose destroying living things agree with the destroyers of living things. Those taking the not given agree with those who take the not given. Those misbehaving sexually agree with others who misbehave sexually. Those telling lies agree with others who tell lies. Those slandering agree with others who slander. Those talking roughly agree with others talking roughly. Those talking frivolously agree with others who talk frivolously. Those coveting agree with others, who covet. Those angry agree with others who bear anger and those who have wrong view agree with others who have wrong view.

4. ßThose abstaining from destroying living things agree with those who do not destroy living things. Those abstaining from taking the not given agree with those who do not take the not given. Those abstaining from misbehaving sexually agree with others who do not misbehave sexually. Those abstaining from telling lies agree with others who do not tell lies. Those abstaining from slandering agree with others who do not slander. Those abstaining from talking roughly agree with those who do not talk roughly. Those abstaining from frivolous talk agree with those who do not talk frivolously. Those who do not covet, agree with others who do not covet. Those who do not bear anger agree with others who do not bear anger and those with right view agree with others who have right view.

13. 3. 6

(28) Aññhangiko Ý Eight Factors

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, beings get together and agree according to the elements.

3. ßThose with wrong view get together and agree with others who have wrong view. Those with wrong thoughts get together and agree with others who think wrongly. Those with wrong words get together and agree with others who have wrong words. Those with wrong action get together and agree with others who have wrong actions. Those with wrong livelihood get together and agree with others who have wrong livelihood. Those with wrong endeavor get together and agree with others who have wrong endeavor. Those with wrong mindfulness get together and agree with others who have wrong mindfulness. Those with wrong concentration get together and agree with others who have wrong concentration.

4. ßThose with right view get together and agree with others who have right view. Those with right thoughts, get together and agree with others who have right thoughts. Those with right words get together and agree with others who have right words. Those with right action get together and agree with others who have right actions. Those with right livelihood get together and agree with others who have right livelihood. Those with right endeavor get together and agree with others who have right endeavor. Those with right mindfulness get together and agree with others who have right mindfulness. Those with right concentration get together and agree with others who have right concentration.



13. 3. 7.

(29) Dasanga Þ Ten Factors

2. ßBhikkhus, beings get together and agree according to the elements.

3. ßThose with wrong view get together and agree with others who have wrong view. Those with wrong thoughts get together and agree with others who think wrongly. Those with wrong words get together and agree with others who have wrong words. Those with wrong action get together and agree with others who have wrong actions. Those with wrong livelihood get together and agree with others who have wrong livelihood. Those with wrong endeavor get together and agree with others who have wrong endeavor. Those with wrong mindfulness get together and agree with others who have wrong mindfulness. Those with wrong concentration get together and agree with others who have wrong concentration. Those with wrong knowledge get together and agree with others who have wrong knowledge. Those with wrong release get together and agree with others who have wrong release.

4. ßThose with right view get together and agree with others who have right view. Those with right thoughts, get together and agree with others who have right thoughts. Those with right words get together and agree with others who have right words. Those with right action get together and agree with others who have right actions. Those with right livelihood get together and agree with others who have right livelihood. Those with right endeavor get together and agree with others who have right endeavor. Those with right mindfulness get together and agree with others who have right mindfulness. Those with right concentration get together and agree with others who have right concentration. Those with right knowledge get together and agree with others who have right knowledge Those with right release get together and agree with others who have right release.û

13. 2. 1.

(11) Sattimadhatu Ý These Seven are the Elements

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anathapindika in Jeta's grove in Savatthi.

2. ßBhikkhus, these seven are the elements.

ßWhat seven? The element of luster, the element of pleasantness, the element of the sphere of space, the element of the sphere of consciousness, the element of the sphere of nothingness, the element of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and the element of the cessation of perceptions and feelings. Bhikkhus, these are the seven elements.û

3. When this was said a certain bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: ßVenerable sir, on what perspective are these elements of luster, splendor, space, consciousness, nothingness, neither perception nor non-perception and the cessation of perceptions and feelings pointed out?û

4. ßBhikkhu, the element `luster' is pointed out on the perspective of darkness.

5. ßBhikkhu, the element `the sphere of pleasantness' is pointed out on the perspective of unpleasantness.

6. ßBhikkhu, the element `the sphere of space' is pointed out on the perspective of forms.

7. ßBhikkhu, the element `the sphere of consciousness' is pointed out on the perspective of the sphere of space.

8. ßBhikkhu, the element `the sphere of nothingness' is pointed out on the perspective of the sphere of space.

9. ßBhikkhu, the element `the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception' is pointed out on the perspective of the sphere of nothingness.

10. ßBhikkhu, the element `cessation of perceptions and feelings' is pointed out on the perspective of cessation.û

11. ßVenerable sir, in what attainments should these elements of luster, splendor, space, consciousness, nothingness, neither perception nor non-perception and the cessation of perceptions and feelings be reached?û

12. ßBhikkhu, the elements of luster, pleasantness, the sphere of space, the sphere of consciousness and the sphere of nothingness should be reached through the perceptive attainments.

13. ßBhikkhu, the element `neither perception nor nonperception' should be reached in the attainment of the remaining determinations.

14. ßAnd bhikkhu, the element `cessation of perceptions and feelings' should be reached through the attainment cessation.û



13. 2. 2.

(12) Saõidànaü Ý With a Reason

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anàthapiõóika in Jeta's grove in Sàvatthã.

2. ßBhikkhus, sensual thoughts arise with a reason, not without, angry thoughts arise with a reason, not without, hurting thoughts arise with a reason, not without.

3. ßBhikkhus, how do sensual thoughts arise with a reason, not without, angry thoughts arise with a reason, not without, hurting thoughts arise with a reason, not without?

4. ßBhikkhus, on account of the sensual element arise sensual perceptions. On account of sensual perceptions arise sensual thoughts. On account of sensual thoughts arise sensual interest. On account of sensual interest arise sensual burning. On account of sensual burning is a sensual search. Bhikkhus, in the sensual search the not learned ordinary man, in three instances falls to the wrong method, by body, words and mind.

5. ßBhikkhus, on account of the angry element arise perceptions of anger On account of perceptions of anger arise angry thoughts. On account of angry thoughts arise the interest to be angry. On account of the interest to be angry arise burnings of anger. On account of burnings of anger is a search to be angry. Bhikkhus, in the search with anger, the not learned ordinary man, in three instances falls to the wrong method, by body, words and mind.

6. ßBhikkhus, on account of the hurting element arise hurting perceptions. On account of hurting perceptions, arise hurting thoughts. On account of hurting thoughts arise the interest to hurt On account of the interest to hurt, arise a burning to hurt On account of the burning to hurt, there is a search to hurt. Bhikkhus, in the search to hurt the not learned ordinary man, in three instances falls to the wrong method, by body, words and mind.

9. ßBhikkhus, non-sensual thoughts arise with a reason, not without. Non-angry thoughts arise with a reason, not without. Non-hurting thoughts arise with a reason, not without.

10. ßBhikkhus, how do non-sensual thoughts arise with a reason, not without, non-angry thoughts arise with a reason, not without, not hurting thoughts arise with a reason, not without?

11. ßBhikkhus, on account of the non-sensual element arise non-sensual perceptions. On account of non-sensual perceptions arise non-sensual thoughts. On account of non-sensual thoughts arise non-sensual interest. On account of non-sensual interest arise non-sensual burning. On account of non-sensual burning is a non-sensual search. Bhikkhus, in the non-sensual search the learned noble disciple, in three instances falls to the right method, by body, words and mind.

12. ßBhikkhus, on account of the not angry element arise perceptions of non-anger On account of perceptions of non-anger arise non-angry thoughts. On account of non-angry thoughts arise the interest to be not angry. On account of the interest to be not angry arise no burnings of anger. On account of no burnings of anger is a search to be not angry. Bhikkhus, in the search without anger the learned noble disciple in three instances falls to the right method, by body, words and mind.

13. ßBhikkhus, on account of the non-hurting element arise non-hurting perceptions. On account of not hurting perceptions, arise not-hurting thoughts. On account of not-hurting thoughts arise the interest to not hurt On account of the not hurting interest arise a burning to not hurt On account of the burning, to not hurt, there is a search to not hurt. Bhikkhus, in the search to not hurt the learned noble disciple, in three instances falls to the right method, by body, words and mind.

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in a house of bricks of his relations.

2. From there the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: ßBhikkhus.û And those bhikkhus said ßYes, venerable sir.û

3. The Blessed One said: ßBhikkhus, on account of elements arise perceptions, then arise views and then thoughts.û

4. When this was said venerable Saddha Kaccàyana said to the Blessed One: ßVenerable sir, is it getting established in the view, that the not rightfully enlightened ones are rightfully enlightened. Venerable sir, how is this view pointed out?û

5. ßKaccàyana, of elements, the element of ignorance is the worst.

6. ßKaccàyana, on account of the inferior element arise inferior perceptions, inferior views, inferior thoughts, inferior intentions, inferior aspirations and an inferior person is born with inferior words, he explains, teaches, points out, establishes and makes clear the inferior. I say, this is the arising of the inferior.

7. ßKaccàyana, on account of the middling element arise middling perceptions, middling views, middling thoughts, middling intentions, middling aspirations and a middling person is born with middling words, he explains, teaches, points out, establishes and makes clear the middling. I say, this is the arising of the middling.

8. ßKaccàyana, on account of the exalted element arise exalted perceptions, exalted views, exalted thoughts, exalted intentions, exalted aspirations and an exalted person is born with exalted words, he explains, teaches, points out, establishes and makes clear the exalted. I say, this is the arising of the exalted.û
