(27) Suddha Ý Pure

ßMonks, five things are a woman's strength. What five? Strength of form, of wealth, of relatives, of children, and her strength of virtue. These five are a woman's strength.û

1. ßMonks, these five are the confidences of the woman. What five? She is confident of form, of wealth, of relations, of sons and of virtues.

2. ßMonks, the woman confident of these five, lives in the household confidentlyû

(29) Pasayha Ý Subduing

1. ßMonks, these five are the confidences of the woman. What five? She is confident of form, of wealth, of relations, of sons and of virtues.

2. ßMonks, the woman confident of these five, lives in the household subduing her master.û

(30) Abhibhuyya Ý Mastering

1. ßMonks, these five are the confidences of the woman. What five? She is confident of form, of wealth, of relations, of sons and of virtues.

2. ßMonks, the woman confident of these five, lives in the household mastering her master.û

3.ûMonks, a man endowed with a single confidence governs the woman. What is that single confidence? It is supremacy.

4. ßMonks, the woman governed by the power of supremacy cannot preserve her confidences of form, of wealth, of relations, of sons or of virtues.û

(31) Aïga Ý Features

1. ßMonks, these five are the confidences of the woman. What five? She is confident of form, of wealth, of relations, of sons and of virtues.

2. ßMonks, the woman confident of form but not of wealth by that she is incomplete in that feature. Monks, when the woman is confident of form and wealth by that she is complete in those features.

3. ßMonks, the woman is confident of form and of wealth, but not confident of relations by that she is incomplete in that feature. Monks, when the woman is confident of form of wealth and of relations by that she is complete in those features.

4. ßMonks, the woman is confident of form, of wealth and of relations but not confident of sons by that she is incomplete in that feature. Monks, when the woman is confident of form, of wealth of relations and of sons by that she is complete in those features.

5. ßMonks, the woman is confident of form, of wealth, of relations, of sons but not confident of virtues by that she is incomplete in that feature. Monks, when the woman is confident of form, of wealth of relations, of sons and of virtues by that she is complete in those features.

6. ßMonks, these five are the confidences of the woman.û

(32) Nàsenti Ý Destroyer

1. ßMonks, these five are the confidences of the woman. What five? She is confident of form, of wealth, of relations, of sons and of virtues.

2. ßMonks, the woman confident of form and not confident of virtues destroys her clan does not perfume it. The woman confident of form and of wealth and not confident of virtues destroys her clan does not perfume it. The woman confident of form, of wealth and of sons and not confident of virtues destroys her clan does not perfume it. The woman confident of form, of wealth, of relations but not confident of virtues destroys her clan does not perfume it. The woman confident of form, of wealth, of relations, of sons and not confident of virtues destroys her clan does not perfume it.

3. ßMonks, the woman endowed with virtues but not confident of form, indeed perfumes the clan does not destroy it. The woman endowed with virtues but not confident of wealth, indeed perfumes the clan does not destroy it. The woman endowed with virtues but not confident of relations, indeed perfumes the clan does not destroy it. The woman endowed with virtues but not confident of sons, indeed perfumes the clan does not destroy it.

4. ßMonks, these five are the confidences of the woman.û

36. 3. 7.
(33) Hetu Ý For the Reason

1. ßMonks, these five are the confidences of the woman. What five? She is confident of form, of wealth, of relations, of sons and of virtues.

2. ßMonks, the woman after death does not go to a good state, is not reborn in heaven, for the reason of form, for the reason of wealth, for the reason of relations, or for the reason of sons.

3. ßMonks, the woman after death go to a good state, is reborn in heaven for the reason of virtues.

4. ßMonks, these five are the powers of the woman.

36. 3. 8.
(34) Thànaü Ý Attainments

1. ßAt one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels' sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha and the Blessed One addressed the monks:

2. ßMonks, these five attainments are rarely attained by the woman who has not done merit What five?

3. ßMonks, the woman who has not done merit, is rarely born in a suitable clan is the first, Goes to a suitable clan, is the second. She would live in the household without an opponent is the third. The woman born in a suitable clan, gone to a suitable clan, without an opponent give birth to a son is rarely attained by the woman who has not done merit, is the fourth. The woman born in a suitable clan, gone to a suitable clan, without an opponent gives birth to a son and rules the master is rarely attained by the woman who has not done merit, is the fifth.

ßMonks, these five are rarely attained by the woman who has not done merit.

4. ßMonks, these five are indeed the gains of the woman who has done merit What five?

3. ßMonks, the woman who has done merit, is born in a suitable clan is the first, Goes to a suitable clan, is the second. She would live in the household without an opponent is the third. The woman born in a suitable clan, gone to a suitable clan, without an opponent give birth to a son is the gain of the woman who has done merit, is the fourth. The woman born in a suitable clan, gone to a suitable clan, without an opponent give birth to a son and rule the master is a gain of the woman who has done merit, is the fifth.

4. ßMonks, these five are indeed the gains of the woman who has done merit.û

36. 3. 9.
(35) Visàrado Ý With Confidence

1. ßAt one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels' sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha and the Blessed One addressed the monks:

2. ßMonks, the woman endowed with these five factors, lives in the household confidently. What five?

3. ßShe abstains from, destroying life, taking the not given, misbehaving sexually, telling lies and becoming negligent taking intoxicating drinks.

4. ßMonks, the woman endowed with these five precepts lives in the household confidently.û

36. 3. 10
(36) Vaóóhi Ý Increase

1. ßAt one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels' sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha and the Blessed One addressed the monks:

2. ßMonks, the noble female lay disciple comes to increase in these five and comes to the essential and to excellence in this body. What five?

3. ßShe increases in faith, virtues, learning, benevolence and wisdom. Monks, the noble female lay disciple comes to increase in these five and comes to the essential and to excellence in this body.

In this world she increases in faith and virtues
In wisdom and both benevolence and learning
Becoming a virtuous lay disciple
She attains the essential in this life itself.û

1. ßThen venerable Anuruddha approached the Blessed One, worshipped and sat on a side. Sitting on a side venerable Anuruddha said to the Blessed One:

2. ßVenerable sir, with my heavenly eye purified beyond human, I see women after death go to a good state, reborn in heaven. Venerable sir, endowed with what factors do women go to a good state, are reborn in heaven?û

3. ßAnuruddha, women endowed with five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

4. ßThey have faith, shame, no regrets, are not hateful, and are wise.

5. ßAnuruddha, women endowed with these five factors, after death, at the breakup of the body, go to a good state, are reborn in heaven.û

(17) Akodhano Ý Not Hateful

1. ßMonks, women endowed with five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

2. ßThey have faith, shame, no regrets, are not hateful and are wise.

3. ßMonks, women endowed with these five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven.û

1. ßMonks, women endowed with five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

2. ßThey have faith, shame, no regrets, not angry, are wise.

(19) Anussukhã Ý Not Envious

1. ßMonks women endowed with five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

2. ßThey have faith, shame, no regrets, do not envy and are wise

3. ßMonks, women endowed with these five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven.û

(20) Amaccharena Ý Not Selfish

1. ßMonks women endowed with five factors after death go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

2. ßThey have faith, shame, do not regret, are not selfish, and are wise

3. ßMonks, women endowed with these five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven.û

36. 2. 6.
(21) Anaticàrã Ý Do not Commit Adultery

1. ßMonks, women endowed with five factors, go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

2. ßThey have faith, shame, do not regret, do not commit adultery,and are wise.

3. ßMonks, women endowed with these five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven.û

(22) Sãlavà Ý Virtuous

1. ßMonks women endowed with five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

2. ßThey have faith, shame, do not regret, are virtuous, and are wise.

2. ßThey have faith, shame, do not regret, are learned, and are wise.

(24) Viriyà Ý With Aroused Effort

1. ßMonks women endowed with five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

2. ßThey have faith, shame, do not regret, are with aroused effort (are strenuous), and are wise.

3. ßMonks, women endowed with these five factors, go to a good state, are reborn in heaven.û

36. 2. 10
(25) Sati Ý Established Mindfulness

1. ßMonks women endowed with five factors go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

2. ßThey have faith, shame, do not regret and are wise with established mindfulness.

3. ßMonks, women endowed with these five factors, go to a good state, are reborn in heaven.û

(26) Pancasila Ý Observe the Five Precepts

1. ßMonks women endowed with five factors, go to a good state, are reborn in heaven. What five?

(1) Manapa amanapa Ý Attractive/Unattractive

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels' sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha.

2. The Blessed One addressed the monks from there: ßMonks, the woman endowed with five factors is on the whole unattractive to man. What five? Is not of beautiful form, does not have wealth, is not virtuous, is lazy and does not bear children. The woman endowed with these five factors is on the whole unattractive to man.

3. ßMonks, the woman endowed with five factors is on the whole attractive to man. What five? Is of beautiful form, has wealth, is virtuous, is clever, not lazy and bears children. The woman endowed with these five factors is completely attractive to man.û

36. 1. 2.
(2) Manàpà amanàpà Ý Attractive/Unattractive

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels' sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha.

2. The Blessed One addressed the monks from there: ßMonks, the man endowed with five factors is on the whole unattractive to woman. What five? Is not of beautiful form, does not have wealth, is not virtuous, is lazy and does not produce children. The man endowed with these five factors is on the whole unattractive to woman.

3. ßMonks, the man endowed with five factors is on the whole attractive to woman. What five? Is of beautiful form, has wealth, is virtuous, is clever, not lazy and produces children. The man endowed with these five factors is on the whole attractive to woman.û

36. 1. 3.
(3) âveõika Ý Exceptional

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels' sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha.

2. The Blessed One addressed the monks from there: ßMonks, these five unpleasant things are exceptional to women and are not shared by men. What five?

3. ßThe woman even when young goes to the man's family separated from her relations. Monks, this is the first unpleasant thing exceptional for women, not shared by men.

4. ßAgain monks, the woman has a season, this is the second unpleasant thing exceptional for women, not shared by men.

5. ßAgain monks, the woman conceives, this is the third unpleasant thing exceptional for women, not shared by men.

6. ßAgain, monks, the woman gives birth, this is the fourth unpleasant thing exceptional for women, not shared by men.û

7. ßAgain monks, the woman has to attend on the man, this is the fifth unpleasant thing exceptional for women, not shared by men.

8. ßMonks, these are the five unpleasant things exceptional for women, not shared by men.û

(4) Tãhi Ý Endowed with Three

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels' sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha.

2. The Blessed One addressed the monks from there: ßMonks, most women endowed with three things, after death meet loss, go to a bad state, to decrease and are reborn in hell. What three?

3. ßMonks, the woman when of tender age has a mind overcome by stains of miserliness, in middle age with a mind overcome by selfishness and during her last days has a mind overcome by sensual greed.

4. ßMonks, most women endowed with these three things, after death meet loss, go to a bad state, to decrease, are reborn in hell.û

(5) (Anuruddho 1) Ý On the dark side

(8) Issukhã Ý Envious

1. ßMonks, women endowed with five factors meet loss, go to a bad state, to decrease and are reborn in hell. What five?

2. ßThey lack faith, shame, do not regret, are envious, and lack wisdom.

3. ßMonks, women endowed with these five factors meet loss, go to a bad state, to decrease and are reborn in hell.û

(15) Pancaveram Ý The Five Observances

1. ßMonks, women endowed with five factors, meet loss, go to a bad state, to decrease and are reborn in hell. What five?

2. ßThey destroy life, take the not given, misbehave sexually, tell lies and taking intoxicating things become negligent

3. ßMonks, women endowed with these five factors meet loss, go to a bad state, to decrease and are reborn in hell.û
