History of Tipitakadhara Mingun Sayadaw

Sayadaw U Vicittasaràbhivamsa better known by the name
Mingun Sayadaw was the Secretary of the State Committee Samgha
Mahànàyaka. He was born in the village of Kyipin City Myingyan on
Wednesday, the day of the eleventh month Tazaungmon, BE 1273 (1911 AD).
His parents are U Sone, village heads, and Daw Sin. he is
The second son of three children. He was given the name Maung Khin.
Since his childhood, his trait was very good. He did not join
his friends in the rough games. he used to
clean living, and only eat foods that are allowed
by her parents.
His father died at age 30, when Maung Khin

When Maung Khin was 5-year-old, his mother, Daw Sin, send him to
Buddhist temple in the village to get a basic religious instruction. Sayadaw
who settled in the monastery was Sayadaw U Sasana whose
get an education from the monastery Nan U in Mandalay. There,
Sayadaw U Sasana teach Myanmar letters, grammar
Basic Pàli, Mangala Sutta (Sermon Blessing) and Lokaniti (Guidance
Behavior) to him.
When Maung Khin became a school student, his grandfather
taught him a variety of prayers and Buddhist Paritta. grandparents

intelligent and able to memorize quickly all that Paritta
taught by monks.
Like all Buddhist children in Myanmar, Maung Khin ordained
become a sàmanera in Min kyaung Taik monastery, Myingyan,
by Sayadaw U Sobhita. Since age 7, he learned from him. He
able to follow all the lessons more quickly than
his classmates, perhaps by intuition and intelligence.
He read the lesson three times a day. He never
leave his lesson until he has completed his
daily homework.
Since childhood, he spent playing time with
reading newspapers, magazines, and books. He began studying
Dhamma literature at the age of 10 years. At that time, because his mother
like to sponsor her son to become a member of Samgha, he
re-ordained as sàmanera by Sayadaw U Sobhita, which
gave him the name of Shin Vicittasara. The name of the language Pàli
means "leading".
After studying eleven Paritta with his memory, Sayadaw U
Sobhita teach Kaccàyana grammar (Pàli grammar)
to him. As a distinguished student, he did not experience
difficulties in studying that grammar language. Grammar
written by Thera Kaccàyana is the most important manuscripts for the
monk in the Theravada Buddhist countries as it is

At age 13, he followed the Vinaya exam held
by the Association Samghasàmaggi in Myingyan, which he managed

other Pariyatti exams organized by the same institution,

monks. Then he received a Pitaka manuscript from Sayadaw U

texts of Scripture.
Since the age of 14, he was very interested in the poems and the
other works of literature. Knowing his interest, Sayadaw U Sobhita
suggested to him to study a book entitled
"Porànadipani", a manuscript containing the composition of poetry
written by Smawbi Saya Thein. This text is the basis for

At age 15, he passed the Religious Test Ground Level
(Pahtamange). The following year, he passed the Religious Test Levels
Medium (Pahtamalat).
Since his youth, he studied the manuscripts Pàli Book,

At age 19, he went to Mingun Hill at Sagaing City to
pursue studies under the guidance of Sayadaw Ashin
Pannàtikkha at the Dhammananda monastery. While studying there, he
obtain support from Dhammàcari Thilàshin Daw.
In the year BE 1292 (1930 AD), with the support of U Thwin and Daw
Thwin, he was ordained a monk.
In the year BE 1294 (1932 AD), he also passed the Pahtamagyi exam ,
sponsored by Thetpan Sayadaw, President of the Association of Supreme
Samghasàmaggi.
In the year BE 1295 (1933 AD), he followed the Religious Test
High Level (Pahtamagyi) and graduated cum laude (with praise).
The following year, he appeared again in the same exam and
ranked first, therefore he received his
rare "Pahtamakyaw".
In the year BE 1295 (1933 AD), he also passed the exam Pariyattisàsanahita
(Sakyasiha), Sathindan (Graduate Level). The following year, he
pass Pariyatti-Sàsanahita Exam (Sakyasiha), Sachadan (Lecturer). word
Abhivamsa then added to its name by the Association
Maha Samghasàmaggi. Thus he is known as "Ashin
Vicittasaràbhivamsa ".
In the year BE 1303 (1941 AD), he passed the exam Dhammacariya
with honors and earned a "Sàsanadhaja-Siripavara-
Dhammacariyà ".
In the year BE 1312 (1950 AD), he followed the selection test
Third Tipitakadhara where he was able to memorize the five manuscripts
Vinaya and the holder of the title "Visittha-Vinayadhara
Mahàvinayakovida ". He was honored by the Head of State of Myanmar,
many Sayadaw, as well as laypeople.
In the year BE 1313 (1951 AD), he followed the selection test
Fourth Tipitakadhara memorize and pass in five manuscripts
Abhidhamma and the written exam first. In the year BE 1314 (1952
M), he graduated with honors in memorizing the second part
of Abhidhamma Pitaka and written exams. he earned
title "Buddhasàsanavisittha Abhidhammika Mahàbhidhamma-
kovida "and get a religious flag from the Head of State

In the year BE 1315 (1953 AD), he followed the Selection Trials
Sixth Tipitakadhara and pass a written test of memorization and
other Pitaka manuscripts. Head of State honor him

"Tipitakadhara". He became the first monk to get
this title. He is adored and respected by many fellow religionists
and the Buddhists all over the country.
From 1954 until 1956, the Sixth Buddhist Council held
at Mahàpasana Cave at Kaba-Aye Pagoda environment in Rangoon.
During the council, he acted as the Executive Committee
Samgha. At this event which recorded an historic event
shook the world. In front of thousands of participants in the Council of
various parts of the world, Tipitakadhara Mingun Sayadaw replied
questions of the entire contents of Tipitaka Scripture filed by
Mahasi Sayadaw. He said 20 books, 16,000 pages,
Tipitaka by rote, with so smoothly, and without one bit fault
too!
Tipitaka memorize tradition of this kind is still preserved without
cut in Myanmar, and until now there were 11
Other Tipitakadhara. This achievement also proves that the tradition
inheriting Buddhism teaching by verbal and memory before
Tipitaka began to be written is possible and not

At the request of the Prime Minister and Council of Buddha Sasana,
He began writing the script Maha Buddhavamsa (Great Chronicle
of The Buddhas) in 1955 and finish in
1960. His writings, Maha Buddhavamsa, which consists of six

In 1979, the Council of the Socialist Republic of Burma
confer the title of 'Agga Mahàpandita "to him. on

Until the end of his life, he continues to support, materially
and spiritually, the Samgha members in their lessons
with respect to the manuscripts of Buddhist scriptures. appropriate
