Victory Over the Nomad Recluse Saccaka
Tathagata subjugate nomad Saccaka while being
dwelling at the Vihara Kutagara in the Mahavana forest near Vesali.
Saccaka the wandering ascetic story is excerpted from Catukka
Nipatta, Culalcalinga Jataka Comments and Mulapannàsa, Commentary
of Culasaccaka Sutta.
At that time, seven thousand seven hundred and seven royal line
Licchavi of Vesali lead Vesali kingdom. All members of the
the royal family was very diligent studying various teachings
hermitage at that time. One day a wandering ascetic
famous for its five hundred views arrived at Vesali.
The members of the royal family was very honored and
treat it very well. A female ascetic
which also has five hundred views arriving on Vesali at
the same time.
The royal family members argue about who
the superior of the two hermits. The debate was over
draw because one recluse can not beat the other
hermit because they both have the same quality.
A strange thought occurs in the Licchavis:
if both hermits were united in marriage, they
will get a very talented offspring. So they
persuade both hermits to be willing to settle in their kingdom
and no longer go wandering. They treat both
sages with respect and provide all the their
needs.
The years passed, the couple had four daughters and
a son. The name of their daughters are, (1) Sacca, (2) Lola,
(3) Avadhàrikà, (4) Paticchàdà and their son named Saccaka.
(According to the Cula Saccaka Sutta Atthakatha, the name of their daughters
are (1) Sacca, (2) Lola, (3) Patacara, and (4) âcàravati).
As they mature, they were given instruction appropriate to views
of their parents: Five hundred views of the father and five hundred
views of the mother, so that all views of a thousand
from their parents. Special counsel given by father to
his daughters:
"My daughters ... if you find a man
men who can refute the views of you, you
must submit yourselves to become his wife if he is
a householder, if he is a monk, you
must be renounced and learn from him. "
After the death of his parents, recluse Saccaka, that more intelligent
than his four sisters, learning more views
deviating and unorthodox beside the thousand views
that he learned from the deceased parents. Without wandering
and only stayed in Vesali provide lessons to
young princes. Fearing his stomach ruptured as too
full of 'wisdom', he tied it with iron
plate.
His parents and sisters to adopt the view that the island Jambudipa
filled with tree Jabu-tha-bye (golden cashew tree). So they
usually bring flowers and Thabye leaves as they
move from one place to another to find opponents
in terms of spiritual views. They are usually
plant a few Thabye tree limbs above the sand dune
or plant at the city gate, as a notice: "Whoever
are able to prove that our view is wrong should
destroy this tree "as a challenge, before they
entered the city.
As they wander from town to town, they finally arrive at
Savatthi. Here too, they planted a Thabye twig in
the gate of the city and challenged by making the announcement.
"Anyone, whether a layman or a monk, who is able
prove that our ideology is wrong, may destroy
This mound and Thabye tree with his feet. "They
leave a message to a child whom they meet
was hanging around the gate, then go to town.
Intellectual Excellence of Venerable Sariputta
On that day, Primary Students Venerable Sariputta, as usual
go collect alms rather late, because he have to
sweep a few places in the vihara region, filling the jars
containing drinking water and care for the sick in the region
Vihara Jetavana. When he arrived at the city gate he saw and
came to Thabye branches. Then he asked the
children there about the strange sight.
They rehearsed the whole matter to the Thera.
Furthermore, the Venerable Sariputta asked them to
destroy that Thabye twig. The children replied, "Venerable
... we do not dare ... we fear ... "The Venerable Sariputta
urging them to utter words of support,
"The kids ... do not be afraid if they ask who is
told you guys, let's just say that I, Sariputta, Primary Students
of Tathagata, whose order you, and tell them,
if they want to argue with me, they are welcome
to the Vihara Jetavana. "The children were soon destroyed the branch
Thabye tree as ordered. The Venerable Sariputta
continue its activities to collect alms and
then returned to the vihara.
When the four sisters were out of town, they
asked the children, "Who told you
to destroy Thabye tree branch? "That children
inform them of the Venerable Sariputta.
Four women were re-entered the city, each
going different direction and make an announcement, "We
learned that the Main Students of Buddha known as the
Sariputta, ready to argue with us; for anyone who
want to listen to this debate should come with us .... "
Many people follow them to the Vihara Jetavana.
Venerable Sariputta felt that the presence of women in
area of residence of the monks are not allowed,
then he met them at the center of the vihara.
Once there, the women were asked, "Is it
you who told the kids to destroy a tree branch
Thabye? "" Yes, "replied the Venerable Sariputta. Furthermore, women
challenge Venerable Sariputta to debate
about ideology. Venerable Sariputta accepted their
challenge and asked who would start first. They
replied "The responsibility to ask is on us." The
Venerable Sariputta replied, "Well, the women, please start
asked. "
Four women were taking the position, one on each side,
and attacked with a series of questions, which amounts to
thousand, which they learned from their parents. Venerable
Sariputta quickly answer each questions, like
cut the lotus flower stalk with a double-edged
sword, without leaving any questions unanswered.
Then he invited the women to
ask more questions, they answered, "Venerable
... we only know that much. "
Venerable Sariputta said, "Well, the wanderers ... I
have answered all the thousand questions that you ask,
and now I'll ask just one question and
you must answer. "After knowing the position of Venerable
Sariputta, they did not dare answer with arrogant "Please
Venerable, we will answer your question; "otherwise
they reply with subject "Venerable ... please; we
will answered if we could. "Before asking a question,
Sariputta explains to them that the question
he would ask not a tough question but just
questions commonly studied by the samanera, and then he
asked the question, "What is meant by
one Dhamma? "(Ekam nama kim).
Four ascetic women did not know the end of the base of
that question. Venerable Sariputta said, "The ascetic women ...
answer the question, "and they acknowledge that they
can not answer, "Venerable ... We do not know the answer."
Venerable Sariputta told them, "Now, I
you have answered a thousand questions while you are not
can answer one question: Who's, the winner and
who loses? "They said," Venerable ... thou
are the winners and we are the conquered. "Venerable
Sariputta asked, "What will you do next?"
They tell Thera what was ordered by their parent
when they conquered (as has been narrated
earlier), and expressed their desire to
accept the ordination from Thera.
Venerable Sariputta gave instructions to them, "This
is not the right place for women to receive
ordination and you guys should come to the vihara of bhikkhunis
and please be ordained there. "So they went
vihara of bhikkhunis with the recommendations from Thera and
receive ordination. (They were ordained by Uppalavanna
Theri, according to Jataka Commentaries). They achieve holiness
Arahatta in a short time, thanks to the diligent efforts in
Road train. (Explanation of the Tathagata about this, found in
Culakalinga Jataka, Catukka Nipata. For further explanation,
can refer to the story of five hundred and fifty Jataka).
(Note: This event occurs when the Tathagata was dwelling in
Vihara Jetavana in Savatthi, some time after the formation of
Bhikkhuni Sasana by granted petition of Mahapajapati
Gotami by the Tathagata when Tathagata was dwelling in the Forest
Mahavana, Vesali. This event is described as it relates
with the story of wandering ascetics Saccaka).
