18. 2. 1.

(11) Kupe nimuggo Paradariko Ý A Man Going to Other Men's Wives Immersed in a Pit

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels' sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha.

2. At that time venerable Lakkhana and venerable Mahamoggallana were living in the peaks of the Gijjha rock.

3. Venerable Mahàmoggallàna wearing robes in the morning and taking bowl and robes approached venerable Lakkhaõa.

4. Approaching said to venerable Lakkhana: ßFriend, Lakkhana let us enter Rajagaha for alms.û Venerable Lakkhana said: ßYes friend.û

5. Venerable Mahàmoggallàna while descending from the Gijjha peak, smiled at a certain spot.

6. Then venerable Lakkhana said to venerable Mahamoggallana: ßFriend, Moggallana, for what reasson did you smile?û

ßFriend, Lakkhana, this is not the right time to ask that question. Ask that question in the presence of the Blessed One.û

7. Then venerable Lakkhaõa and venerable Mahàmoggallàna went the alms round in Rajagaha. After partaking the meal and returning from the alms round approached the Blessed One, worshipped and sat on a side.

8. Sitting on a side venerable Lakkhana said to venerable Mahàmoggallàna: ßFriend Moggallàna, when descending from the Gijjha peak you smiled at a certain spot, for what reason did you smile?û

9. ßFriend, when I was descending the Gijjha peak, I saw a man immersed in a pit of excreta together with his head.

10. Friend, then it occurred to me: `Indeed it is wonderful and surprising to see a being, a non-human, a gain of self like this.'

11. Then the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: ßBhikkhus, the disciple should live wisely with aroused knowledge, when he knows, sees or witnesses such a thing.

12. Bhikkhus, in the past I saw this being, yet I did not tell it to anyone. If I had told, others would not believe me and it would be for their ill being and unpleasantness for a long time.

13. Bhikkhus, this person was an adulterer in this same Rajagaha. As a result of that action he suffered in hell for many years, for many hundreds of years, for many thousands of years, for many hundred thousands of years. And as a result of that action suffers having gained that self

(12) Gåtakhadi-Duññha Brahmano Ý An Evil Brahmin Eating Excreta

(Repeat sutta 18. 2. 1. substituting as follows:)

9. ... When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a man immersed, together with the head in a pit of excreta, eating excreta with both his hands ...

13. ... this being was a Brahmin in this same Rajagaha during the dispensation of the rightfully enlightened Blessed One Kassapa. He invited the bhikkhus and filled excreta in a trough and said: `Good Ones eat and carry away as much as you. like.û'

(13) Nicchavitthi; Aticarini Ý A skinned Woman; An Adulteress.

9. ... When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a skinned woman moving in space and she was followed and attacked by vultures, crows and hawks and they pull a piece from her and divide it among them and she gives a cry of distress ...

13. ... She was an adulteress in this same Rajagaha ...

(14) Maïgulitthi Ikkhanitthi Ý Fortune Teller

9. ... When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a woman with the vital spots prominent moving in space and she was followed and attacked by vultures, crows and hawks and they pull a piece from her and divide it among them and she gives a cry of distress ...

13. ... She was a fortune teller in this same Rajagaha ...

(5) Okilini; Sapatthangàrakokiri Ý An Outcaste Woman; Putting Charcoal on Co-Wives

9. ... When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a woman scorched by throwing burning charcoal moving in space and she was followed and attacked by vultures, crows and hawks and they pull a piece from her and divide it among them and she gives a cry of distress ...

13. ... bhikkhus she was the chief queen of the king of Kalinga and she put the co-wives in a charcoal urn.

(16) Sãsachinno; Coraghatako Ý Executioner of Robbers; Without a head

9. ... When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a body without the head moving in space, his eyes and mouth were in the chest and he was followed and attacked by vultures, crows and hawks and they pull a piece from him and divide it among them and he gives a cry of distress ...

13. ... he was an executioner of robbers by the name Hariko in this same Rajagaha ...

(17) Bhikkhu Ý A Monk

9. ... When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a monk, his double lined robe was blazing, bowl was blazing, belt was blazing and his body too was blazing and he gives a cry of distress ...

(18) Bhikkhuni Ý A Bhikkhuni

9. ... When descending the Gijjha peak I saw a bhikkhuni, her double lined robe was blazing, bowl was blazing, belt was blazing, and her body too was blazing and she gives a cry of distress ...

13. ... she was an evil bhikkhuni in the dispensation of the rightfully enlightened Blessed One Kassapa.

13. ... she was an evil one observing the precepts in the dispensation of the rightfully enlightened Blessed One Kassapa.

(21) ÝSamaneriyo ÝA Trainee Bhikkhuni

1. At one time the Blessed One was living in the squirrels' sanctuary in the bamboo grove in Rajagaha.

2. At that time venerable Lakkhaõa and venerable Mahàmoggallàna were living in the peaks of the Gijjha rock.

3. Venerable Mahàmoggallàna wearing robes in the morning and taking bowl and robes approached venerable Lakkhaõa.

4. Approaching said to venerable Lakkhaõa: ßFriend, Lakkhaõa let us enter Rajagaha for alms.û Venerable Lakkhaõa said: ßYes friend.û

ßFriend, Lakkhaõa, this is not the right time to ask that question. Ask that question in the presence of the Blessed One.û

9. ßFriend, when I was descending the Gijjha peak, I saw a trainee bhikkhuni moving in space. Her double lined robe was blazing, bowl was blazing belt was blazing and her body too was blazing and she gives a cry of distress.

10. ßFriend, then it occurred to me: `Indeed it is wonderful and surprising to see a being, a non-human, a gain of self like this.û'

11. Then the Blessed One addressed the monks: ßMonks, the disciple should live wisely with aroused knowledge, when he knows, sees or witnesses such a thing.

12. ßMonks, in the past I saw this being, yet I did not tell it to anyone. If I had told, others would not believe me and it would be for their ill being and unpleasantness for a long time.

13. ßMonks, this trainee bhikkhuni led an evil life during the dispensation of the Blessed One Kassapa. As a result of that action she suffered in hell for many years, for many hundreds of years, for many thousands of years, for many hundred thousands of years. And as a result of that action suffers having gained that self.û

(11) Cakkhu Ý The Eye

1. I heard thus. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anathapindika in Jeta's grove in Savatthi.

2. Then venerable Rahula approached the Blessed One worshipped and sat on a side.

3. The Blessed One said thus to venerable Rahula who was seated on a side:

ßRahula, is the eye permanent or impermanent?û

ßIt's impermanent, venerable sir.û

4. ßThat which is impermanent is it unpleasant or pleasant?û

ßIt's unpleasant, venerable sir.û

5. ßThat which is impermanent, unpleasant, a changing thing is it suitable to be considered, `that is mine, I am that, it's my self?'û

ßThat is not so, venerable sir.û

6- 17. ßRàhula, is the ear ... re ... nose ... re ... tongue ... re ... the body ... re ...

18. Is the mind permanent or impermanent?û

ßIt's impermanent, venerable sir.û

19. ßThat which is impermanent is it unpleasant or pleasant?û

ßIt's unpleasant, venerable sir.û

20. ßThat which is impermanent, unpleasant, a changing thing is it suitable to be considered, `that is mine, I am that, it's my self?'û

ßThat is not so, venerable sir.û

21. ßRàhula, the noble disciple seeing it thus turns away from the eye, turns away from the ear, turns away from the nose, turns away from the tongue, turns away from the body and turns away from the mind.

22. ßTurning away, detaches himself, is dispassionate, and is released. Released, knowledge arises, `Birth is destroyed, the holy life is lived, duties are done, there's nothing more to wish'.û

3. Sitting on a side venerable Ràhula said to the Blessed One: ßVenerable sir, Blessed One, knowing and seeing in which manner do the latent tendencies of measuring in the form of `I be' in this sixfold conscious body and all external signs not occur.û

4. ßRàhula, whatever matter in the past, in the future or at present, internal or external, hard or fine, un -exalted or exalted, far or near, all that matter is not mine, I am not in it and it is not my self. Thus it should be seen as it really is with right wisdom. Ràhula, whatever feelings, ... re ... perceptions ... re ... determinations ... re ... consciousness in the past, in the future or at present, internal or external, hard or fine, un -exalted or exalted, far or near, all that consciousness is not mine, I am not in it and it is not my self. Thus it should be seen as it really is with right wisdom.

2. Then venerable Ràhula approached the Blessed One worshipped and sat on a side.

3. Sitting on a side venerable Ràhula said to the Blessed One: ßVenerable sir, Blessed One, knowing and seeing in which manner do my latent tendencies of measuring in the form of `I be' in this conscious body and all external signs with an onward drive to have likes, get destroyed completely and am released?û

4. ßRàhula, whatever matter in the past, in the future or at present, internal or external, hard or fine, un -exalted or exalted, far or near, all that matter is not mine, I am not in it and it is not my self.

ßSeeing this as it really is, with right wisdom you are released without holding.
