Change the view of Three ascetic
Brothers and A Thousand recluse
After helping thirty Prince Bhaddavaggiya achieve
three Magga-Phala that lower and ordained them,
Buddha continued his journey and arrived at Uruvela.
First Patihàriya
At that time, three hermit brothers: (1) Uruvela-Kassapa
(Oldest brother), (2) Nadi-Kassapa (second brother), and (3)Gaya
Kassapa (youngest brother), was dwelling in the Uruvela Forest. Of
This three person, Uruvela-Kassapa was the leader and teacher of
five hundred students recluses, Nadi-Kassapa had three hundred students
and Gaya-Kassapa has two hundred students.
Buddha went to the hermitage of Uruvela-Kassapa and ask
petition, "If it does not bother you, O Kassapa, I,
Buddha, wanted to stay for one night at your fireplace. "
"No trouble at all," replied Uruvela-Kassapa. "But
I must tell you that in the fireplace there is a dragon

Second Patihàriya

before the Buddha, bowing respectfully, and stood

Uruvela-Kassapa came and said to the Buddha, "The time
eat, O monks, the food was ready. Please come to eat

Third Patihàriya
(On the next night) after the first watch that night passed,

Fourth Patihàriya

Fifth Patihàriya

pertapaanku this morning, bringing large amounts of food, hard,

Buddha knows the mind of Uruvela-Kassapa with Cetopariya

Sixth Patihàriya
One day, a slave woman from a dealer
from Sena Nigàma named Panna died, his body
(Utujarupa) wrapped in a cloth made from hemp fiber and

Buddha took the hemp fiber cloth (for use) as

garbage (pamsukålika).

Seventh Patihàriya
The next day, Uruvela-Kassapa went to the Buddha and

to a guava tree at the end Jambådãpa and take guava fruit,

Patihàriya Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh
The next morning, when Uruvela-Kassapa came and invited
Buddha said, "Time to eat, O monks! Food has been
ready. Please come to eat! "Then the Buddha said,
"You go first, O Kassapa, I, the Buddha would

(A) go to the mango tree near the guava tree at the end
Jambådãpa and took the mango;
(B) go to emblic myrobalan tree near the guava tree in

(C) go to the yellow myrobalan tree near the guava tree in
Jambådãpa end and take the yellow myrobalan fruit;
(D) goes to the Nature Gods Tàvatimsa and take the flower coral,
then come back earlier than Uruvela-Kassapa and sat
in the fireplace.
Uruvela-Kassapa saw the Buddha who had arrived earlier in the
fireplace and sat there before he got there,
asked the Buddha, "O Brother! Even though I came

Buddha replied, "O, Kassapa, after I told you to
